Giving to Charity Through Estate Planning

Do you have questions about giving to charity through estate planning?

Many of our donors call Children's Service Society asking how to make an estate plan so they can contribute wisely and efficiently to their favorite charities.

In response to these requests, Children's Service Society has arranged to have Jack Ryser, Financial Advisor with Wells Fargo Advisors LLC, help with estate planning. In most cases, this service will be free of charge. Mr. Ryser will use his experience in estate planning to help with structuring gifts to Children's Service Society and all estate planning needs. This is an opportunity to have estate planning completed and philanthropic wishes made clear.

Estate planning is a tremendous benefit to beneficiaries and charitable organizations. An estate that is not properly structured can be stressful and expensive for beneficiaries. Often times, fees and taxes can be avoided with some simple planning.

For a complimentary meeting with Mr. Ryser to answer your estate planning questions, please call Nora with Children's Service Society at 801-355-7444 or email This e-mail address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it .

Frequently Asked Questions About Planned Giving:

  • What is Planned Giving? Planned giving means arranging a donation now so that the charitable organization of your choice will realize the benefits of your kindness during your life and also after you have passed away. Planned gifts can include bequests, gifts of life insurance policies, donations of charitable gift annuities, charitable lead trusts, charitable remainder trusts, and numerous other estate planning vehicles.
  • What are the advantages for me in making a planned gift? A planned gift can help you achieve tax and financial goals today as well as after your death. More importantly it can help you achieve your philanthropic goals efficiently and effectively. In many cases, with some simple planning, you can make a larger gift than might otherwise have been possible in your lifetime. There are some strategies that allow you to enjoy tax advantages now that you wouldn't otherwise receive. Simply, money you may have to pay in taxes may be able to be diverted to charity. Taxes or charity? Sounds like an easy decision.
  • Are there income tax benefits available now for future charitable gifts from my estate? Many people don't realize the tremendous income tax benefits available now against current income for their future commitment to charity. Let us show you how to enjoy those benefits.
  • Are there ways I can give in my estate plan without hurting my heirs? Yes, in fact there are many ways in which an estate plan can be structured so that your heirs are not impacted negatively by your gifts. These typically are sophisticated estate planning vehicles and should be done by a capable advisor. Schedule a meeting with Mr. Ryser to discuss the various options.
  • I would love to give a gift now but I need the income those assets provide. Is there a way for me to still get that income and benefit charity? Not only can you still receive your income from your assets, but you can receive a significant current income tax benefit as well. Additionally, in many cases it can be structured so that you receive income for your life and your heirs receive the asset value at death; not to mention your charity receives a benefit. Everyone wins.
  • Can I specify how my gift is to be used? Yes, you can direct your gift to any of a number of areas. We recommend that you discuss the options with us.
  • Why should I let the beneficiary organization know about my planned gift if it will not actually benefit for years to come? By informing the participating charitable organization you make them aware of a future source of income. With that knowledge the organization can plan better. This enhances your initial act of generosity.
