There were 12,579 reported victims of abuse and neglect handled by DCFS in Utah in the fiscal year 2004. The cause of over 1,000 of the 1,894 children who were removed from their homes was drug abuse. Over 500 removals involved domestic violence. Data further showed that since 2000 there has been a 55% increase in the number of children placed with relatives rather than in foster homes.
