Become a Welcome Baby volunteer home visitor and enjoy the fulfillment of strengthening families in your community. Have fun interacting with parents and their new babies, bringing new information and activities while sharing insights from your personal experience. You can make a difference in the lives of families in Salt Lake County! Here is what you need to know and do to get involved with our program.
Welcome Baby is a home visitation program sponsored by the Utah County Health Department and the United Way of Utah County. We train volunteers to visit new parents in our community. We offer two volunteer opportunities: (1) Long term visits to families and (2) One-time visits to families.
Long Term Visits: Volunteers visit their families once a month and act as a support during the transition to parenthood by teaching about infant development, health, safety and community resources. A commitment of eight months is asked of “Long Term Volunteers” to maintain consistency with the families they visit. Volunteers share information and activities to help parents support their child’s development. Volunteers are trained and given all the information they will need to share with families. During the first visit families receive a free gift donated by someone in the community for their baby, a “Keeping Your Baby Healthy” guide, and handouts on monthly development.
One Time Visits: Volunteers visit families who want to be visited only one time. During this visit the volunteer shares a free gift donated by our community, a “Keeping Your Baby Healthy” guide and additional community information. A commitment of three months is asked of our “One-time Visit Volunteers”
We also ask that volunteers attend at least one In-service per quarter year. In-service is a great way for volunteers to enhance their home-visitation experience and the information they can bring to families. Go to our In-service page to find out more.
We look for volunteers that have experience working with children and families especially experienced mothers, grandmothers, and couples. We also recruit students with some education in related fields.
