About Building Blocks Childcare Center

Our Origin Story

Building Blocks Childcare center in Taylorsville, Utah was established by Children’s Service Society of Utah (CSS) in November 2021 to provide high-quality, accessible, and affordable early learning and childcare to underserved families in the community. Under the umbrella of CSS’s comprehensive family services, the center was renovated to create a safe, healthy, and high-quality environment. At peak capacity, Building Blocks serves up to 41 children, aged 6 months to 5 years old. The centers’ goal is to meet the growth, development, and early education needs of children through a high-quality environment, while promoting positive relationships in biological, adoptive, and kinship families.

Through funding and community partnerships, Building Blocks offers affordable tuition rates whilst providing high-quality childcare, working to close the achievement gap in early childhood education. The center also accepts tuition payments made through the Department of Workforce Services (DWS).

Our High-Quality Childcare

Building Blocks holds a High-Quality Rating through Utah’s Childcare Quality System (CCQS). A High-Quality Rating reflects childcare programs that prioritize student health and safety while implementing practices that promote positive outcomes for children, fostering trusting relationships between educators and children, and supporting ongoing professional development and coaching for staff. Learn more about The Childcare Quality System.

In addition to its High Quality Rating, Building Blocks also participates in several exemplary health, nutrition and safety programs, holding various awards and certifications through each. The Teaching Obesity Prevention in Early Child Care Settings (TOPStar) program, is a Utah-based initiative that supports early childhood programs in strengthening nutrition, physical activity, and breastfeeding policies. The HealthierCACFP initiative recognizes providers who go above and beyond the basic Child and Adult Care Food Program (CACFP) requirements to promote wellness. Building Blocks holds ‘highest honors’ awards in every available category under the HealthierCACFP. These programs contribute to the strong health and wellness environment at Building Blocks.

The Utah Core State Standards for Early Learning guides the foundation of Building Blocks’ Preschool program. Staff are responsive to children’s current strengths, knowledge, and skills when planning and creating experiences to support learning, while also being cognizant of the background and specific needs of each child. Building Blocks also utilizes the Creative Curriculum through Teaching Strategies as a lesson planning tool to implement in the classroom. All preschool students are assessed using the Preschool Entry and Exit Profile (PEEP) evaluations.

One of many components that sets Building Blocks apart from other early childhood programs is that of family engagement and a strong community of support for children. Following best practices outlined under CCQS, Building Blocks aims to establish and promote positive, productive relationships with students’ families. Parents and caregivers work together in a collaborative effort to address barriers that hinder the optimal growth and development of children. Family engagement can be especially challenging when there are language and cultural barriers, which is why Building Blocks employs a diverse, multilingual staff, representative of the population we serve.

Building Blocks Professional Development

Building Blocks Childcare Center of CSS also serves as a professional development resource for employees to gain skills and experience alongside qualified early childhood professionals. Professional Development is a vehicle that addresses gaps in services within the community and empowers educators to grow in their field through learned and experienced education. In a profession facing a shortage of trained professionals, ongoing professional development equips educators to better support and strengthen families, children, and the community.

All employees at Building Blocks are either working towards earning their Child Development Associate (CDA) Credential or pursuing a degree in early childhood education. Through extensive and ongoing training, teachers and caregivers at Building Blocks provide high-quality care and learning experiences for the children they serve.
